The Tendu Program

The Tendu Program at Dance Theater of Harlem School is a starter program designed for children ages 3 to 8 years. The Tendu program is divided into two sections:

Pre-Dance/ Ages 3-5 years

The Pre-Dance program is designed to provide our youngest students with a strong foundation that will support their dance training as they grow. Physically, students learn exercises that develop body and spatial awareness, coordination, balance, and muscle strength. Students are taught simple ballet vocabulary, and learn to connect basic movements into phrases. Students begin to make connections between music and movement, and musicality is encouraged through simple rhythm and counting exercises. Independence is encouraged as students learn to leave parents and take class on their own (Parents are not allowed to observe classes, except during Open School Weeks). Discipline is encouraged as even our youngest students are expected to follow the rules of the studio. Community is encouraged as students learn to work together in the studio, to exhibit respect for themselves, fellow dancers, and teachers, and to have fun!  All Pre-Dance students will participate in the annual Spring Performance.

Pre-Dance students are required to take one ballet class per week. Elective disciplines are available, but optional.

pre-ballet/ ages 6-8 years

The Pre-Ballet program prepares students for Level 1 of the Lower School program. Students continue to build muscle strength, balance and coordination. They learn to warm and stretch their bodies properly through our signature Pre-Barre warm-up. Students are introduced to the ballet barre where they learn to execute basic barre exercises. Ballet positions and vocabulary continue to develop, and students learn class structure through working at the barre, in center and across the floor.  Musicality is developed as students learn to count and move to more complex music. Students learn performance skills and choreography in preparation for the annual Spring Performance.  Students are asked to bring a dance journal to each class, so they may write down basic ballet terms and definitions as well as notes from their teacher. Discipline and responsibility are encouraged as students are expected to follow the rules of the studio, to be punctual and in dress code for all classes and to focus and work hard during classes. Community continues to be encouraged as students learn to work together in the studio, to exhibit respect for themselves, fellow dancers and teachers, and to have fun! All Pre-Ballet students will participate in the annual Spring Performance.

Pre-Ballet students are required to take one ballet class per week. Elective disciplines are available, but optional.
