DTH On Demand: LIVE Open Class

Pilates Mat
Special Guest Instructor
Cynthia Shipley

This Pilates Mat class will focus on the principles of Pilates: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath and flow. These principles will be obtained through a succession of movements and the connection of the mind to the body. This is an open level class, therefore progressions and modifications will be used to achieve the purpose of each exercise.

“To listen” is truly the first principle of Pilates. Following Ms. Shipley’s instructions exactly as they are given will insure full benefit of the exercises and safety to the body.

Please note: A mat is recommended for this class if possible, but a good alternative would be a large towel for the back. Please have a small hand towel to support the neck or for perspiration as well.

Cynthia J. Shipley came to Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1984. While there, she completed the four year accredited program, became a dancer with the Workshop Ensemble, the student company, and toured for two years with the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company. It was during this time that Cynthia was introduced to Pilates. After several years of training and study she obtained her certification through The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning, which it was then called.

Cynthia trained and was certified by Romana Kryzanowska, a protégé of Joseph Pilates, and her daughter Sari Mejia Santo. After more than twenty years of teaching and constant training, Cynthia has acquired the title of Master Teacher Trainer with the Romana’s Pilates organization.

Cynthia is co-owner of Lifespan Pilates, a Romana’s Pilates studio, which houses the only certification program for Romana’s Pilates in New York City.
