Umfundalai African Dance
Welcome to Umfundalai (ma-foon-da-la), a Kiswahili word meaning, “essential”. This contemporary Pan-African dance technique draws from movements and traditions of the African Diaspora. The technique espouses a holistic view of the body and the arts including theater, drumming, song, masquerade and vocalization. The codified technique of Umfundalai stands on the shoulders of the Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus techniques, it is great cardio and history all in one class!

“Bomba” is an Afro- Puerto Rican style of traditional music that reflect the influence of three different cultures that shaped Puerto Rico’s History: Taino (natives indigenous), Spanish and African. The “Bomba” music and dance focused on the powerful expression of Puerto Rico’s African Heritage. In this Bomba class, we are going to learn the basic steps, “paseo” and “piquetes” of some of the most popular “bomba” rhythms. Open to all level of movers!

Modern- Horton Technique
This beginner level Horton class will enlist the core foundation of the technique amongst students. We will put into practice some of the most fundamental studies of Horton including flatbacks, lateral stretches, leg swings, Egyptian walks, T positions and more, challenging students to explore musicality, dynamics and artistry to percussive sound, it’ll leave you pleasantly sore the next day!

Dive into the fundamentals of Lester Horton’s technique building strength and stamina throughout the whole body and brain stimulation. Students will engage in a series of anatomical exercises that deal with lengthening muscles and releasing the body while creating a grounded foundation for flexibility, coordination and freedom of expression. Daphne’s approach to the Horton-based class is built with preserving the technique with added modifications making it suitable for every level. Enjoy this dynamic class as we play with percussive musicality and challenge the body and mind.

Legendary Ballerina Karen Brown’s Tips and Advice for Training En Pointe class is for all dancers interested in learning how to develop strength and stamina for training en pointe. The class will explain how to sew, tie and care for your pointe shoes. Learn how to warm up and improve your ankle and foot strength. Basic barre combinations and simple pointe combinations in the center will be reviewed and demonstrated. All levels welcome!
