Dance Theatre of Harlem

Lower School

The School of Dance Theatre of Harlem is committed to serious, quality ballet training. Students in the Lower / Upper School are placed according to proficiency and are given the opportunity to present their work before an audience during the school year and as part of the Annual Spring Performance. Students who have reached the required proficiency level may be invited to participate in Sunday Matinee performances, special, and community events.

LOWER SCHOOL
LEVELS 1 THROUGH 3
Classes in Levels 1 through 3 provide a course of study in beginning ballet through elementary ballet. These classes systematically introduce basic ballet vocabulary and concepts and instill correct habits and discipline. Students are challenged to strive for correct form and technique. As the student becomes more experienced and mature, Horton dance techniques may be introduced (Jazz Fusion, Horton, etc.).

Focus is placed on fostering and maintaining a love for dance and music while systematically developing the ability to exercise concentration and discipline, a knowledge of the dance vocabulary, and increase coordination and expressive movement skills.

Classes typically run evenings between 5:00pm EST – 8:00pm EST and Saturdays, depending upon the level. Beginning Fall 2022, the DTH School will provide families with options for in person and virtual classes for all students in our Lower/Upper School.
